When I first started this program, and heard about the cost, my initial thought was, "Where am I going to get that kind of money?" My job provides enough to support myself, and have a little cushion in case of emergencies, and despite how well I budget, there was no way I was going to make $5500 appear out of thin air.
Then I started the GoFundMe page, and got my first 3 big contributions! I couldn't believe how fast everyone responded! In the blink of an eye, I had nearly $300 raised for the trip! Then I mailed out my Christmas cards, with a small blurb about the trip and how they could contribute if they wanted to. Since I knew that the holidays are an expensive time for all of us, I didn't really expect much of a response, but I at least wanted to let them know.
And HOLY CRAP! Around Christmastime, I got a bunch of Christmas cards returned from family, old coworkers, former neighbors, and college professors, all with well-wishes for my journey, and altogether raised another $200 for the trip! I was blown away again!
